Chicks in the Mail!

In April of last year we ordered 25 chicks and got them in the mail.  The post office called us at 4 am and asked if we could come pick up our chicks, so we did. You have to order a minimum of 25 chicks so they keep each other warm enough for the trip.  All but one survived.

We got 15 Golden Laced Wyandottes, 5 Silver Laced Wyandottes, and 5 Ameraucanas (also known as Easter Eggers because they lay blue eggs).

We chose Wyandottes because they are an all purpose farm chicken, good for laying eggs (brown ones) and good for meat if you get too many of them.   We got the Ameraucanas for the pretty egg color.  The blue egg gene is dominate, so anything crossed with them will also have blue eggs.

As you can see it was a pretty exiting morning at our house and the kids have really enjoyed them.  The chicks grew amazingly fast and in about 6 months we started getting fresh eggs every day.
